Summary[]

The Emerald Girl is an incomplete being in a water tank, and despite lacking sensory organs, she can see Hargain Crossrosier peering into the tank at her for several decades. He gave her consciousness once again, seeking to revive her against her wishes.

At a round table in the Royal Palace, Helios VII meets with the Prime Minister regarding the disappearances in Lion City. No new cases have occurred in the small town for six months, but the disappearance of Joshua Herbert and the involvement of a Crossrosier member had piqued the interest of the House of Lords. Eventually the matter is settled by the Prime Minister to ignore the disappearances.

Twenty years prior, the first war the then-prince Helios VII participated in had ended up a massacre due to a wraith, before being saved by the human-friendly wraith Romalius, who was also a friend of Helios VI. The two had also conspired to cause Lord Hank Fieron's death, which was reported as an accident. Currently, Romalius is meeting with Helios VII once again to discuss the disappearances, where Romalius tells Helios to pay it no mind because he will see to the problem. the wraith then regrouped with his adoptive son Raymond Atwood to visit the Crossrosier Mansion.

As Hargain's ninety-ninth experiment, a teenage girl with emerald green hair, lies dormant in her tank, he examines his Ending Records, not noticing Romalius has arrived. Once he notices, the wraith attempts to acquire his help in taking Beritoad down due to his recent activity and causing the death of a Crossrosier lackey, but Hargain refuses due to old age and having nothing to gain. Romalius offers his personal Ending Record, saying Beritoad had stolen its other half. Realizing the complete set of records could be the key to his experiments succeeding, Hargain agrees and settles on six months of work using the records for their goal. Raymond is offered as an assistant and supervisor, to which Hargain shows him to a room on the second floor of the mansion.

A servant assigned to Raymond is Liam Highland, and during their greeting, they recognize each other. Liam had first met Raymond at the circus when he was a beastmaster, and had then gone on to become a mercenary before coming into Crossrosier's employment. As they walk to the church, Raymond denounces Crossrosier as a sham; the two discuss Hargain's experiment and Raymond speculates that it may be a strawman wraith that the society can take down for publicity, with Liam telling him to keep those remarks to himself. Over a week later, Raymond receives a letter from Benji Kemp about Gibbet, Rack, and Maiden continuing their activities, with Gibbet being spotted in Mercerie City and even having its mayor send citizens to Torcia Tower as sacrifices. Benji adds that Raymond should pay him a visit first if he's planning on visiting the tower again.

Raymond later snuck into Hargain's laboratory while he was away, wandering through an unlocked door before being caught by the sorcerer. As Raymond was given the chance to leave without penalty, a tank shattered and the Emerald Girl had crawled up to Raymond, calling him "papa".
